If you’re travelling along the mid-south coast you won’t miss the striking figure on the hill overlooking Aldinga. She’s been attracting attention from far and wide and today we’re going to find out all about her.
Already, hundreds of visitors have been stopping off at Cactus Canyon Rd, to wander over for a closer look.
The goddess Guan Yin is the first major piece in the Mahayana Buddhist temple under construction on Sellicks Hill.
She’s the embodiment of compassion, kindness and love, and her name translates to “observer of sound” – she listens to the plight of worshippers, and answers their prayers.
Guan Yin’s construction is a marvel in itself – at eighteen metres tall, she was carved in 96 separate pieces – a task taking eighteen sculptors in China’s Fujian province a year to complete. Her head alone took a month to be hewn from a 40 tonne piece of granite.
And when she arrived here, local construction and masonry companies worked with Chinese assistance to assemble the statue, bringing in a 90 tonne crane and 10 tonnes of reinforced concrete. It’s been a 2-year, million dollar project.
The goddess is just the beginning. Temple spokesman Lee Chew explains there are big plans for the fifty five hectare site.
Lee: When it’s completed you will see a Chinese garden, you will see a Tung style dynasty shrine that is eighteen metres tall…this shrine will not have any nails holding it up. It will all be fitted. It’s made from hard timber shaped from China. It will come here and be assembled by experts and this will be the only one we believe in the southern hemisphere.
Briony: Already, a temporary centre holds a rare white jade Buddha, carved from a single piece of Burmese stone – these treasures will be moved to the main shrine when it’s completed.
It’s painstaking work… when construction first began here just three Buddhist nuns lived on site, sleeping in tents and planting all the perimeter trees by hand. But the location of this site has special significance, especially for the statue of Guan Yin – she stands on a very specific meridian.
Hazel: If you draw a line straight across to china there is another statue exactly the same facing each other. Onkaparinga councillor Hazel Wainright says the Guan Yin is already having an impact.
Hazel: It’s fantastic. Being a landmark on the Fleurieu Peninsula we are directing people here all the time because they actually do celebrate people coming down here and going into their facility here so it’s a wonderful tourism drawcard for the area.
And according to Lee Chew, it can be quite an emotional experience.
Lee: When they come and see the statue they feel serene and some of them get very emotional. I’ve seen ladies with tears running down their eyes and they are not even Buddhists… this is fascinating.
