Loud clicking/tapping/clacking noise coming from behind the dash related to the HVAC operation.
The problem is one of the two blend door actuator in the dash behind the glovebox is failing.
To fix you’ll need:
- a new blend door actuator
- small phillips head screw driver
- star drive bits and driver (#20 or #25 I think)
- 5.5mm or 7/32″ combo wrench and/or socket
- tiny hands and some patience
open the glovebox and extend it down by popping the stops at the back of the glovebox under the lip on the dash panel.
remove the screws holding the glovebox to the glovebox door and to the latch mechanism. There’s four phillips head screws holding the box to the door at the corners and then 3 or so star socket headed screws holding the latch mechanism on.
There are two blend door actuators – one just to the left of the glovebox right behind the dash panel and another to the right and back a little bit on the side of the blower. Get it to start clicking and feel them to determine which one is bad – one of them will feel like there’s a jackhammer inside it – that’s the one you need to replace.
There’s just two or three hex head screws holding them in place but there’s not a lot of room to get your hands in there to work – remove the screws and disconnect the wiring and then install the new actuator and test it out.
